When I do a pro carpet cleaning job in a customer’s home the first
“step” is always to vacuum to remove all lose dirt and debris.
Stairs are what we call “high traffic” areas or lanes. Every time a
person wants to move to the upper level or lower level of the house they
must use the stairs.
So, not only does the carpeting on the stairs accumulate a lot of
dirt but the pile gets matted down, making it difficult to remove the
embedded dirt. That is why you need the best vacuum designed for that
application to get the job done right and with the least amount of effort..
I have used upright vacuums with expansion hose and attachments,
canister vacuums, portable vacuums, and hand-held vacuums and all those
will work but you have to choose which one will work best for your home and your particular needs.
In the interest of saving money,
time, and space we want our machines to perform as many functions as
possible. We shall take a look at a couple of those options.
That works out great in some situations but sometimes a specialty machine or specialized vacuum is the best way to go.
What I have found is that even with specialized vacuums there are compromises.
The ideal vacuum for stairs would have a motorized brushroll to dig out the dirt from the matted down pile, a powerful suction, a long power cord, and be easy to handle.
Until recently a vacuum cleaner with those features would be relatively expensive.
Below are the Vacuums I have found to be the best options for vacuuming stairs!

RECOMMENDATIONS
Option #1 Corded Handheld Vacuums
A Handheld Corded Vacuum specially designed to work best on stairs (like the ones shown below) offer one of the best and least expensive options .The obvious downside is a Handheld Vacuum is basically useless for your carpeted floor. Fortunately a good one is not too expensive.
I DO NOT recommend CORDLESS handheld vacuums for stairs simply because they lack the power to drive a brushroll and provide enough suction to be a viable option

Carefully Selected
Vacuum Cleaners!
This Handheld Corded Vacuum is a dirt-gobbling little monster!
Don’t bee fooled by the word “handheld,” this is a serious vacuum cleaner!
The 6 amp motor provides all the necessary power to drive the Brushroll and suck the dirt up from stairs or any other surface
The motorized Brushroll has an On/Off switch for vacuuming either Carpeted or Non-Carpeted Stairs.
It has a unique feature that allows you to easily clean the vertical portion of the stair step by rotating the Visor.
The detachable hose along with the included Attachments make it extremely versatile for cleaning chores like furniture, etc.
Very important, it comes with a 25 Foot Long power cord to allow you to reach the top or bottom of almost any stair case.
The Eureka RapidClean Step Handheld Vacuum, 41A is on of the best specialized vacuums for stars!!
And the price is surprisingly low!
